My Specky Girl
Clarissa, Health April 15th, 2008Introducing my new Clarissa.

This lady saw her and me on webcam last night. She commented that Clarissa look more like me now!
I was very upset at first but now it has slowly sink in. I have to accept the fact that I can’t do nothing much about it now. It is all in God’s hand. I believe, In His Time He will make all things beautiful.
How I detect it? Well, this is how she watches TV and see the computer screen. Notice how she stares? And she will go near to the TV no matter how many times we make her sit far away from it. This all began when she started watching TV when she was around 2 yo. Before that, she is not interested in watching TV.

At first we thought that is a habit until recently hubby told me to take a look at her eyes when she watches TV closer. She does not stare when she go close. And during the recent Zoo trip, she did not show any interest in watching the animal show even though she likes animals a lot. I guess the stage is too far for her to see.
So we brought her to see an optometrist on last Friday after my colleague told me that her son watches TV the same way as Clarissa.

The computer shows very high result. More than 400 and her astigmatism is high too.

After seeing the optometrist, it is not that high but still very high to us. My power is less than 200. The optometrist prescribes a longer power for her. Left 325, Right 150 Astig/150 Shortsighted. And we need to send her for check up every 3 months.

This is how she watches TV after wearing her glasses. No more staring.
Now I know why she does not show interest in school. She can’t see!
Now I know why she often fall down and knock herself. She can’t see!
I felt so bad scolding her for being clumsy all this while.
Mommy is so sorry, Clarissa!

I don’t know if this helps but my friend has not girls in spec at the age of 3 and 6. Their nanny let them watch TV lying down all the time, so their eyesights were pretty bad.
Anyway, don’t worry, lasik is an option when she grows up.

Hi, Miche. Lucky you brought Clarissa to the optometrist earlier and got her the spectacles. I’m always worried that my girl will wear specs one day like her daddy and his family but not my family. My family members are all in good eyesight but lately I noticed myself is going to need to see an optometrist soon. Really need to take good care of our eyes, don’t spend too much time on pc and tv.

Understand how you felt..i do reprimand my kids at times and later to realise it’s actually not their fault but mine…
I told my girls that if I were to catch them sitting to near and staring at the TV, I will off it. It works and so far, their eye-sight are still ok.

Hmm…. yeah have to take care hor…. my elder has lazy eyes (the eyes actually looking at you but it doesn’t seems to) but she can see clearly… have not brought them to the opto before, maybe I should…. I trained them to eat “kei chee” as I used them a lot in my soups, suppose to be good for our eyes…

Ya, don’t blame yourself. I won’t expect my children to be spec free cos both hubby and I are wearing specs.

i oso hope to pull my girl for power checking, but she refuses, as the doc will put some dunno what kind of eyedrops in her eyes, which makes her very nervous coz a bit pain. Doc says that this is to get accurate eye power from checking. That’s y I still not get that done! coz my girl is still afraid.

Hi, my nephew has the same staring habbit as ur Clarissa. He has cock-eyed, and always very clumsy. Recently he met a paed optician and the doc told my SIL that he needed to patch his eyes an hour every day, to correct any lazy eye sindrom. AFter that, he prob need to undergo a minor surgery to correct the cock-eye. Lastly, he might need glasses for his eyesight. So kesian, he is only 3yo!

Miche, did the optometrist explain how she developed this?
