Perfectionist
Belle, Education, Parenting February 26th, 2008Belle has been crying before she goes to bed and wakes up abruptly in the morning worrying about her homework.
Before bedtime…
“Mommy, tomorrow have school or not?
“Mommy, I finished my homework or not?â€
The moment she wakes up…
She coughs, she gags and she cries.
“Mommy, I not yet finish my homework.â€
“Mommy, I didn’t do correctly. Teacher will scold or not?â€
“Mommy, today have school or not?â€
Everyday, I make sure she finishes her homework before she goes to bed. Sometimes there are Chinese characters which she has to trace the dot. She worries that her teacher will scold her if she did not trace it nicely. Yup, sometimes it goes a lil’ bit out of the line but I did not correct her. 5 yo only what, teacher won’t expect a perfect handwriting.
Hubby said Belle is a perfectionist. She is stressing herself and me too by being one!
Yesterday morning, I told her principal about the whole scenario. Asking his help to find out whether there is any teacher who likes to scold her student or Belle got scolded before.
The moment she starts to be mobile, we noticed that Belle will try her very best to avoid mistakes. Hubby remembers one time where she fell from the chair at the dining room For a few days, she avoid walking at that area or even climbing on the chair.
I think I mentioned it a few time in this blog that if Belle did sometime wrong, I only need to scold or warn her once not to repeat it again and she won’t. Disciplining Belle is a piece of cake.
In the afternoon when I went to fetch Belle from school, her principal told me that there are only 2 boys in her class that got scolded often for not doing their homework. Maybe Belle worried that the same will happen to her if she did not finish her homework.
Now I am trying to figure out how to de-stress Belle in this matter.
Any idea anyone? Please.

Even kids can be perfectionists, wow! I think just let her know that everyone makes mistakes and it is ok to be wrong sometimes? Perhaps as she grows and experiences things on her own, she’ll learn that mistakes happen.

She sounds like a little worrier. I guess you just have to keep on drumming into her that its ok to make mistakes sometimes.

Hi,Miche. Think you should tell her that everyone makes mistakes. My girl is a perfectionist and me too but I always tell her that its ok to make some mistakes.

I have one at home too. I think it’s true that we should tell them that making mistakes is normal. There is a story about “winning is nice but is it very important?” Do you want that story, Miche?
