To Cane or Not To Cane
Parenting November 21st, 2007I am not going to debate whether caning is the only way to discipline our children. It will be a never ending debate. 
I just wanna know how many parents out there that do not cane their children and how many cane their children when they are stubborn. 
As you all know, I don’t. But don’t get me wrong ok, I only cane them as the last resort. Meaning all other methods does not work like talking, negotiation, “bribery”, time-out etc. Then only I will take the cane out to smack them. But as we all know, cane does not work on every children. It depends on their personality.
So, if you do spare the rod, what other methods that you use to discipline your children. Please share.

Miche - I appreciate your posting on this. Thank you for allowing me to express some of my views on your blog. I certainly agree that this will be a never ending debate. I was not picking on you but my objective was to highlight that there are better ways in which to ‘encourage’ a child to do the right thing. Regards, Coln

What is caning? Is that the same as spanking? I have used an open hand on my child’s (clothed) backside only once or twice over the last thirteen years with three children. Sometimes you need to get their attention.
I’ve never hit them with a ‘thing’ though….at least not on purpose. There was that one time though that I swung around on a ladder with a paint can and caught a child’s ear…
